Durga Puja is a Hindu festival where people celebrate the Mother Goddess and her victory over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura. That’s why her other name is “Mahishasur Mardini”

Durga Puja Story:

There are two stories regarding Durga Puja. According to Our Puranas and Shastras once upon a time, there was a constant war between Devtas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons). Sometimes Devas or Asuras used to win. When Gods used to win they send Asuras to their own world Patal.

When Asuras used to win they used to capture Swarga then kicked them off from their residence. And again Devtas used to search for a way to win Swarg.

Then came one of the most powerful demon king Mahishasur. Mahishasur did a Tapasya and asked a boon from Lord Brahma who was pleased with Mahishasur’s dedication.

Mahishasur asked boon of immortality but after Brahma refused to give that boon he asked that there should not be any male creature who can kill Mahishasur. Brahma agreed to give that boon. After getting that boon Mahishasur became Demon King and started his advancement towards Swarga. He defeated Devtas and throw them out of Swarga. Not only Swarga he and his army also started torturing people of Earth.

In that time Devatas and devotees went to Tridevs to search for a way to defeat and kill Mahishasur to stop all these torches. All that time worship to Devi Shakti or Devi Parvati. After she agreed to go to war against Mahishasura all Devtas including the Trivev (Brahma, Bishnu, Maheswar) gave her their energy and their most powerful weapons such as Indra gave bajra, Bishnu gave Sudarshan Chakra, Maheshwar gave Trishul, Himalaya gave the lion.

After getting all the weapons Devi Durga went to fight against Mahishasura. She was engaged in a fierce battle with him for nine days. Sometimes the demon took human form and sometimes the buffalo form. After these fights for long nine days, Devi killed Mahishasur at Nabami night.

After killing Mahishasur Devi comes to know as a new name ‘Mahishasur Mardini’.

There is a second story regarding Durga Puja also. We get this story from epic Ramayana. According to Ramayana when Lord Rama was getting ready to go to a battle with Asura King Ravana to rescue his wife Sita Lord Rama wanted to get blessings from Mother Goddess.

But that time wasn’t the right time for puja as that time Devi was being worshiped during spring. Lord Rama invoked her in the wrong time during Sharadiya that’s why it is named ‘Akal Bodhan’ means invoking the Goddess at the wrong time. Later this Sharadiya Puja or Akal Bodhon became more famous than the original Bashanti puja.

Durga Puja History:
If we go back to the pages of history then we will find that the Lavish and grand celebration of Durga Puja started in late 1500. According to local history-rich Zamindar or landlord of Dimapur and Malda started it. But there is an alternative theory also in this matter.

Some people believe that Raja Kangshanarayan of Taherpur or Bhabananda Mazumdar of Nadiya started the Grand Durgapuja celebration during Sharat or Sharadiya Durga Puja in Bengal on 1600. But that time Pujas were Pujas of rich and reputed families. Common people were rarely part of it.

Common people started to be part of the Durga Puja Celebration active after the starting of Community Puja or Baroyaari Puja. The name baroyari comes from Baro Yaari which means a Puja organized by 12 friends. In 1970 12 friends of Guptipara, Hooghly arranged first community Puja with the help and contribution of local people. After performing Baroyaari Puja in ancestral home Murshidabad from 1824 to 1831Raja Harinath of Cossimbazar brought this concept of community Puja in Kolkata at 1832.
It didn’t take much time to transform this small scale Baroyaari puja to big scale and grand Sarbojanin puja. Sarbojanin Puja is organized by the public with full public contribution and participation. That’s the reason it is called Sarbajanin which means the occasion of all people.

In 1910 Sanatan Dharmotsahini Sabha for the first time organized Sarbajanin Durga Puja at Bagbazar, Kolkata. After that, it gets popularity and nowadays it is the dominant form of Bengali Durga Puja.
